Make Family Memories in the Kitchen over the Holidays

Looking for some fun holiday inspired things to do this year? Well, look no further than your kitchen! There are many fun things to do at home that will simultaneously help keep the holiday spirit alive while letting you stay warm in your cozy kitchen.

Bird Seed Wreath

These make excellent homemade gifts and for home use. All you need are a few ingredients you probably have lying around your kitchen and bird seed. Click the link for an excellent tutorial on how to make the wreath. Bird seed wreathes are not only eco friendly, they are fun to make, too!

Holiday Cookies

Bake cookies as a family! There are many different kinds of cookies with different amounts of work to make them. For instance, you could buy premade dough and simply bake them. Or you could make cookies from scratch. My family still gets together to make our green sprinkled Christmas tree sugar cookies every year. This could be your family’s new tradition that lasts through the ages!

Pine Cone Crafts

There are many fun things to do with pine cones! To begin with, you could take a hike to collect the cones together, or you could simply purchase pine cones at your local craft store. From there, the possibilities are endless, but since we are talking about kitchen crafts you could make pine cone ornaments or bird feeders. To make the bird feeders, cover the pine cone in peanut butter then roll in bird seed. To make kitchen themed ornaments make a paste out of flour and water, paint the paste onto the pine cones, immediately shake or roll sugar sprinkles onto the pine cones, allow to dry.

Salt Dough Ornament

This is another activity that could be given as a gift or made for personal use. Salt dough ornaments are incredibly easy and fun to make. Click the link for a great tutorial on how to make salt dough ornaments. It’s very similar to making cookies, in a way, but without the expectation of eating anything. Before baking, we like to use a tooth pick to gently carve the date on the back of the ornaments. Also, you could use the salt dough to make hand or foot print ornaments. Once the dough is rolled out, press the hand or foot into the dough, cut around the imprint, create the string hole, and bake as usual.

Orange and Clove Pomanders

Make your home smell amazing with an easy homemade air freshener made out of whole cloves and oranges. These also make lovely gifts, especially hostess gifts. All you need to make the pomanders is an orange, whole cloves, and ribbon. You can choose to either fill the orange with cloves, or make a design with the cloves. This does take quite a bit of time to complete a pomander, however all that time can be spent keeping your hands busy while chatting. That’s a win-win situation to me.
